With so
many bloggers and fashion critics today, it’s easy to forget that this
modern-day phenomenon of documenting street style was actually pioneered long
before The Sartorialist was born... 83 year-old Bill Cunningham has been obsessively
chronicling high society charity events and fashion street trends for ‘Times
Style’ and his own columns ‘On the Street’ and ‘Evening Hours’ for The New York
Times for decades. Bill loves clothes, not labels, or that a celebrity got their
dress for free. He is interested in style and clothes. It seems for a lot of
people the line between fashion and style is blurred... But Bill can definitely
see the difference. He is an eccentric who lives for his work and has dedicated
his life to documenting what is individual.
"More than anyone else in the city, he has the whole visual history of the last 40 or 50 years of New York. It’s the total scope of fashion in the life of New York.” - Oscar de la Renta
Bill
caught the attention of Richard Press, who created a fascinating documentary that
follows Bill doing what he loves. This highly acclaimed film is a portrait of
New Yorkers and their dedication to style. It’s also a portrait of a man whose most
valued wealth is his humble dedication to something he loves.
The documentary (that was made in 2010) has been brought into the spotlight once again with its March release in London this
year.
If you haven’t seen it already, hire it and treat yourself to a night in.........
